FAQs

How do I book the initial free 20 minute appointment?
You can phone, text, e-mail or use the contact form on the website to contact me and we can arrange a mutually convenient time and whether you would like to have the appointment by Zoom or telephone. If I'm not available I will always aim to get back to you as soon as possible and within 24 hours.

Can I book my first full session without the initial free appointment?

I would recommend having the free initial 20 minute appointment first which gives us both an idea if the counselling on offer is suitable to you, at no cost to you, however you can book a full session straight away if you wish.

What should I expect in the first initial free appointment?

The initial free appointment is a chance for you to share with me what brings you to counselling and what your expectations are and what you would like to get out of the sessions.  I can then share with you how I work and a bit more about the counselling process and hopefully you will get a sense of whether you feel comfortable talking to me and if I am the right counsellor for you.   You can then decide to book your first full session there and then or you can of course take some time and get back to me if you wish.

What should I expect in my first full session?

The first full session is an assessment session.  To begin we will go through confidentially and the limits to it. I will then ask you some questions which will lead to me gaining a deeper understanding about what brings you to counselling, taking some details around your current situation and what you would like to gain from counselling and it is a chance for you to get more of a feel for how I work.  This first session is an opportunity for us both to get more of an idea about if I am the right person to help and support you.

What is a counselling contract?

A counselling contract is a document setting out the terms in which the counselling will take place.  It is a mutual agreement between counsellor and client and includes the kind of service the client should expect to receive and the counsellor's responsiblities and the client's responsibilities in the counselling relationship.

How often should I have counselling?

It is recommended to start with weekly or fortnightly sessions to help build the therapeutic relationship, however, it is your choice and I can be flexible according to your needs.

How long should I have counselling for?

It is entirely up to you and is different for everyone.  Some people benefit from short-term therapy (i.e. 6 - 8 sessions) and some people stay in therapy long-term until they have got what that need from the process.   We will regularly review the therapy together to ensure you are getting what you need and if at any point you are ready to leave therapy, then we will work towards an ending together.

How do I pay for my sessions?

Payment for sessions is due 24 hours before the session and by bank transfer (details will be in the counselling contract).

What if I need to change or cancel my session?

When you book in for your first session that will become your regular session day and time.  If, for whatever reason, you need to change or cancel a session, please contact me by e-mail or text, giving at least 24 hours if possible.

How do you store my personal data?
To comply with data protection and GDPR, personal data kept about you is stored on an internal client management system which is encrypted. To view my Privacy Statement click here
